The modern world today entails all sorts of demands from various groups. We are expected to think beyond optimizing operations and financial sustainability. As part of our program to support UN’s narrative of promoting quality education, Unity Foods has adopted ‘School of Karachi’. The school is located in Ghaaggar Phattak, near our business operations at Port Qasim.
The management of the school is doing reasonably well in running its operations in a backward area amid unfavorable circumstances. The education is low on the list of priorities of the inhabitants. Hence, the bare minimum fee - the recovery of which also becomes challenging at times. After detailed due diligence and multiple visits by our ESG team to acquaint with the prevalent conditions of the school, Unity Food’s sustainability committee decided to adopt the school and make it part of our ESG commitments.
Our prominent steps towards sustainability included: installing solar panels to not only make the school self-sufficient in generating energy for use but also to minimize carbon-footprint; Setting up a well-equipped computer lab; providing financial support through inducting teachers and improving remuneration of existing staff. Above all, we ensured retention of needy students and enrolment of out of school children by sponsoring their tuition fee, school uniforms and course books.
