Unity Foods is on a mission to enhance food security. What are their plans?
Almost 25 years from now, something extraordinary will happen. Somewhere either in a noisy Lahore suburb, a quiet village in interior Sindh, or the walled city of Peshawar a child will be born.
No one will know who they are or what their birth signifies, but they will mark Pakistan’s population hitting the 40 crore mark. According to the latest census, Pakistan currently has a population of 24.5 crores which is projected to grow to over 40 crores by 2050.
It is part of a larger trend worldwide. The 11th of July is officially recognised by the United Nations as the World Population Day, meant to raise awareness of the issues surrounding rising population. From 2023 to 2024, the world population grew by 0.91%.
The percentage may seem small, but it translates to roughly 7 crore people added to the tally across the planet. The challenge of population growth is quite obvious. The earth has never had this many residents at the same time, and the number keeps growing. As populations have grown, more and more of the earth’s resources have been used up. The question is, how do we best utilise the scarce resources we have? Already, reports from 2023 suggest that almost 28.2 crore people in 59 countries around the world face high levels of acute food insecurity.
Framing the problem
The problem is unavoidable. In an international ranking of the Global Hunger Index (GHI) this year, Pakistan ranked 92 out of 116 nations, with its hunger categorised as ‘serious.’ Pakistan currently faces a scenario in which it is largely food sufficient but not food secure.
The lack of food security has strong economic implications. According to a special section of the SBP’s annual report from 2019-20, the state of food security has strong linkages with the state of human capital in the country. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has also estimated that a high rate of malnutrition can cost an economy around 3-4% of GDP. In the case of Pakistan, estimates suggest that malnutrition and its outcomes cost the economy 3% of GDP (US$ 7.6 billion) every year.
To put this in very mathematical terms, malnutrition and food insecurity manifests in the shape of high child mortality rates, prevalence of zinc and iodine deficiencies, stunting, and anaemia, which lead to deficits in physical and mental development that weakens labour productivity and loss of future labour force in the country.
On a much more human level, however, the lack of food security means a whole lot of misery, hunger, and anguish. According to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report for 2020, prevalence of undernourishment in Pakistan is 12.3% and an estimated 26 million people in Pakistan are undernourished or food-insecure. Pakistan’s children have suffered and are continuing to suffer. Malnutrition from an early age results in consequences that last entire lifetimes. Add on top of that a high population growth and unfavourable water and climatic conditions and you have a scenario that threatens to spill over and cause mayhem. Pakistan is barely maintaining its current food security level of just over 60%.
A question of responsibility
So what is to be done? There are two sides to it. On the one hand, there needs to be a greater focus on our agriculture and how it is being handled. Pakistan’s food security, especially for a fast growing population, depends entirely on how much food we can produce for more people with the same amount of land.
And then there is the private sector. What can companies do to address this problem? Take, for example, Unity Foods. To mark World Population Day, Unity Foods is dedicating itself to combating malnutrition and enhancing food security.
At the heart of Unity Foods’ mission lies the Taqatwar Pakistan campaign, a proactive initiative aimed at addressing malnutrition through the distribution of nutrition-rich food products to segments of the population that deserve it the most. With financial challenges and other issues that plague several impoverished households across the country, this initiative aims to boost the overall health profile of the entire population.
So far, under the Taqatwar Pakistan program, the company has reached more than 1.5 lakh families across the country. Additionally, Rs 74.4 lakhs has been donated for education while Rs 35 lakhs have been given for a diverse range of healthcare initiatives. Together, these contributions not only serve to improve physical wellbeing across the population but they also offer sustainable solutions to families through access to quality education for the leaders of the future.
Fixing the food security system
Of course, these are good initiatives that the company has taken in order to try and give back. What is more important is that, as a food company, Unity strengthens Pakistan’s food security. And as they mention in their vision statement, the company aims to “be a reliable and sustainable supplier to the nation’s food security system by way of developing and implementing efficient farms to fork supply chains across the country.”
This is vital if Pakistan is to overcome the challenge of a rising population. A well-nourished population is pivotal to national development, Unity Foods has focused its efforts on fortifying essential food items with vitamins and minerals. By ensuring that every household has access to these fortified products, Unity Foods aims to bolster the health and well-being of communities across the nation.
Beyond nutrition enhancement, Unity Foods has pioneered corporate farming through its Unity Plantations initiative. This innovative approach integrates sustainable agricultural practices to ensure a robust farm-to-fork supply chain and counter food insecurity.
By maintaining control over the production process from planting to distribution, UFL guarantees the quality and reliability of its food products. This not only supports local farmers but also enhances food security by reducing dependency on external sources.
At present, the corporate farming and livestock management solutions integrated by Unity Foods not only cultivate crops like rice, wheat, maize, sesame seeds and edible oil seeds but also have the capacity to house over 300,000 animals per year. Unity Plantations is poised to expand considerably over the years, offering robust agricultural produce to the population at large.
This is the sort of focus on nutrition enrichment and sustainable agriculture Pakistan needs. Agriculture in the country faces some very serious issues. We are far too reliant on imports, there is not enough research and development, farm mechanisation is low, and climate change is a ticking time bomb. The private sector has a major role to play in this. The faster they recognise the fact of our growing population as not just a problem but also an opportunity, the quicker Pakistan will be able to get out of these troubled waters.

Unity Foods continues to showcase a strong commitment to ESG principles through a partnership with The Green Ark (TGA). A MoU was signed to this effect between both companies whereby TGA will collect and transform scrap materials from Unity Foods to create a diverse array of recycled products intended for reuse.
The initiative aims to facilitate the circular economy by mitigating the impact of single-use plastics that contribute significantly to the deterioration of global ecosystems.
Unity Foods regularly undertakes lasting projects that align with its objectives to reduce the impact of conventional industrialization on the environment. Under the current partnership with The Green Ark, a leading recycling solutions provider, Unity Foods will not only ensure the traceability of its packaging waste but also highlight a robust commitment to a greener environment by contributing to the circular economy.
With an average of more than 13,000 kilograms of waste every month including items like garbage debris, oily pouches, plastic jerry cans, tin scraps, plastic bags, and cardboard cartons, a substantial amount of materials will be recycled which will not end up in landfills or incinerators that ultimately damage nature.
“Global warming is a present and potent threat, especially for Pakistan which despite producing a negligible level of greenhouse gases, faces the brunt of the consequences of this global phenomenon. At Unity Foods, we always aim to set a precedent, particularly with our ESG practices that underscore our commitment to ensuring our children can inherit a safe and healthy planet. This partnership with The Green Ark is another step in this direction and we aim to continue commencing similar initiatives in the future”, commented Ms. Nageen Rizvi, Head of Corporate Communications & Sustainability, Unity Foods at the signing ceremony.
At the occasion, Mr. Habib Elahi, CEO, The Green Ark said: “We are committed to reducing the carbon footprint through recycling waste into resin and building materials such as pavers and tiles made from end-of-cycle plastic waste. By this strategic partnership between Unity Foods and TGA, we can ensure that that waste generated is responsibly recycled and adds value in the circular economy”.

ISLAMABAD: The 7th Edition of LEADERS IN ISLAMABAD BUSINESS SUMMIT (LIIBS) kicked off with a full house at a local hotel in Islamabad. More than 15 global speakers and 1000+ delegates were present at the event to unlock growth opportunities and collaborate for mutual benefit and advancement.
The 7th Edition of LIIBS is jointly hosted by Nutshell Group and Unity Foods Limited, in collaboration with OICCI (Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry), with Faysal Bank Limited as the Platinum partner, and InfraZamin Pakistan as the strategic partner. The theme of the event this year is ‘Collaborating for Growth’.
Welcoming the honorable public sector leadership, global leaders, and delegates to the 7th Edition of LIIBS, Muhamad Azfar Ahsan, Pakistan’s Former Minister for Investment, reinforced the shared vision of Unity Foods Limited and Nutshell Group, for a successful, self-sufficient, and sustainable Pakistan. Azfar emphasized the need for collaboration between the Private, Public, and Military sectors. “Pakistan is at a crossroads, but I am optimistic that the finance team under the dynamic leadership of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb will collaborate and do the needful. To progress as a country, we need competent teams in four main stakeholder domains: political government, bureaucracy, business leadership, and business community.”
In his welcome address, Lt. Gen. Omar Mahmood Hayat (Rtd), Chairman of Unity Foods Limited, while expressing his eagerness to engage in more collaborative efforts for the benefit of Pakistan’s national interests, stated, “Given the current environment, if there was ever a time for a collaborative approach, specifically for businesses in Pakistan, that time is now. It is imperative to encourage participation in public-private partnerships to address industry challenges, advocate for regulatory reforms, and promote sustainable development initiatives.”
Focusing on the futuristic approach to strengthen the infrastructure of Pakistan, and the proven success of regional corporations across the globe, H.E. Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Chairman, Senate of Pakistan, said, “Ending differences between political powers is imperative. Inflation is at its highest level in the country’s history. Due to a decline in investment in Pakistan, there is a fall in per capita income. Pakistan is facing numerous environmental issues, including floods, rainfall, rising temperatures, & others. We possess abundant resources and talent, but optimizing our potential requires a concerted effort marked by collaboration at all levels – within government, across industries, with public and private sector working together, and with our regional and global partners.”
Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, graced the event and in a conversation titled, The BIG Picture, he said, “We are committed to making Pakistan stand as an honorable country. Let us stop playing politics for the next few years and become an economic nation. The key to success is to compete and collaborate simultaneously. When it comes to market share, we should compete but when it comes to industry share, we should collaborate, with this strategy we can be on a growth trajectory within the next 2 years.”
Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Finance & Revenue, having recently returned from Washington after deliberations with the IMF, focused on the ‘need to do’ on an immediate basis. Commenting on the proactive role of government he said, “Agriculture and IT exports are the two sectors that can be the driver of growth for Pakistan’s economy. It is up to us as a country to come up with investable, bankable projects. There has been a 33.6% increase in agricultural loans between July and February of the current fiscal year. The government aims at alleviating inflation and providing relief to the weaker segments of society. Efforts are being made to control inflation and provide relief to the weaker segments of society. FBR tax collection increased by 30.2%, exceeding the target of PKR 6,707 billion. Ministry of Finance, FBR, and the Ministry of Law are taking steps to increase collaboration in revenue collection.”
Session Chairman Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division), spoke on the historical and present paradigms of the power sector in Pakistan. Commenting on the required steps to be taken he said, “The power sector in Pakistan is facing numerous challenges, it is unfeasible to hinder growth because certain items require subsidies to cater to all socioeconomic classes. The government must demonstrate the courage to embrace its social responsibility while fostering industrial growth. This needs to find a balance between supporting industry development and ensuring essential items remain affordable for all segments of society.”
Shaza Fatima Khwaja, Minister of State for IT & Telecom, outlined the bigger picture that Pakistan needs to look at. “The Government’s vision is to digitize Pakistan in three verticals. Governance, economy, and society overall. We will be inviting tech experts from Pakistan and from around the world to assist us and ensure transparency, ease of doing business, streamlined governance which will result in sustainable growth. By combining resources, expertise, & perspectives, private & govt sector collaborations can leverage the strengths of both sectors to address the complex challenges & opportunities of our rapidly evolving digital landscape.”
Dr. Ishrat Husain, N.I, H.I, Author, Economist, former Federal Minister & Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, reiterated the urgency to collaborate for long-term national goals, he said, “Pakistan needs broad-based & sustainable development which should not benefit only a few, while the rest of the population is left behind. Pakistan should have a common agreed goal around a shared mandate. The evidence from developing countries for the past 70 years has concluded that in addition to Physical Capital, Human Capital, and Natural Capital, two more types of capital are equally important for achieving growth – Social Capital and Intellectual Capital.”
Lasha Tabidze, Global Chief Digital Officer, VEON, highlighting the role of technology in collaborative ventures, shared, “Pakistan will soon be a part of the digital future. Our focus is on the rural and suburban areas of Pakistan. JazzCash aims to lower the financial divide by empowering women and the young population of Pakistan. With 30% of total JazzCash wallet customers being women, 23,000 registered women merchants, and 6000 women agents working in the network of cash digitalization, the scope is unlimited.”
Layth Al Falaki, Chief Executive Officer, GuarantCo Limited, focused on the changing landscape of Africa through collaborative ventures with inbuilt financing of infrastructure. Showcasing it as an ideal pilot study, he stated, “We have been working in Pakistan for 10 years and have invested in 20 projects. Investment has been made in alternative energy and digital sectors. Asian countries are facing a shortage of USD 450 billion annually in infrastructure and USD 900 billion annually in the social sector. If someone wants to bring foreign investment into Pakistan, make it easier for the people to come and go from the country.”
Hatem Bamatraf, President & CEO, PTCL Group shared his experiences and insights into developments that best relate to the theme of the conference. He focused on digitization for Pakistan and the resulting connectivity as an expedited route to development. An empowered telecommunication infrastructure, he stated, is pivotal to progress, as it must be the central force for all other industries. “Pakistan can benefit from the industrial revolution, being the 5th most populous country in the world, and with 60% of its population being youth, it can leverage this demographic dividend. Being born in the digital age gives Pakistani youth a big advantage and since a significant portion speaks English, it gives them an edge.”
The pre-lunch session concluded with a thought-provoking dialogue, Climate & Infrastructure, moderated by Sajjeed Aslam, Partner, Spectreco LLC, USA. The panelists, Boo Hock KHOO, Chairman, InfraZamin Board; Philip Skinner, Head of Middle East, North Africa & Pakistan, GuarantCo and Origination Lead for Nature, Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG); Karen Tsand-Hounsell, Head, Business Development, InfraCo, Asia Development Pte. Ltd.; Emilio Cattaneo, Head of Technical Assistance, PIDG; and Maheen Rahman, Chief Executive Officer, InfraZamin Pakistan, exchanged views on strategies for a sustainable and secure future for the generations to come.
Expressing concern for sustainable and long-lasting infrastructure, Boo Hock said, “Financing is available, but why it fails to show up in a company or project is because of lack of confidence. Money inflow is principally based on confidence.”
Taking his thoughts forward, Philip added, “GuarantCo aims to mobilize the local currency market in Pakistan. We focus on mobilizing domestic sources of capital like bond markets or bank markets by using our guarantee as a form of credit enhancement to move capital into projects.”
Asserting the need for collaborative efforts for Pakistan’s stability, Maheen said, “The private sector is indeed a key player responsible for driving project development and propelling the country forward. We must break away from perpetual reliance on fiscal space. Pakistan’s total private sector lending is 17% of GDP, while countries like India & Bangladesh are in the range of 50-60%. More lending into the system in Pakistan is essential on the back of strong bankable projects.”
Adding to the discussion, Karen said, “Infrastructure is a great enabler, and the crux of the issue is underinvestment, sovereign balance sheets are not big enough, so we need to bring in private sector capital. We are committed to advancing infrastructure development, fostering investor confidence for investments in the sector.”
Emilio assured Pakistani stakeholders of the intent to collaborate and said, “Our technical business offering is fundamental and catalytic in ensuring that the projects are structured successfully, particularly in the context of ensuring that they have a positive climate impact and are constructed in a resilient and sustainable way.”
The third session on Emerging Leadership Issues comprised of addresses by Praveen Thakur, Vice President Asia, Teradata, and Lucia Real Martin, GAICD, Global Executive Director, ACCA. They deliberated over the role of AI and Big Data in collaborative ventures and about the preparedness of organizations using modern technology for sustainability and successThe fourth session of the conference titled, Pakistan’s Power Sector: The Way Forward, comprised an address, and a panel discussion featuring industry leaders: Mohammad Ali, Caretaker Federal Minister for Energy, Power & Petroleum (2023-24); Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi, Chief Executive Officer, K-Electric; Ruhail Muhammad, Chief Executive Officer, Lucky Electric Power Company; and Ayla Majid, ACCA’s Global Deputy President and Founder & CEO, Planetive. It was moderated by Sajjeed Aslam, Partner, Spectreco LLC, USA.
Sajjeed opened the discussion with an emphasis on linking the power sector to economic development. Ali brought his experience of the public sector and private industry with profound insights into a collaborative framework. He commented, “Nearly half of Pakistan’s electricity generation capacity is under government control, covering both hydroelectric and nuclear power plants. These sources play an important part in ensuring energy security, and present challenges in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Moonis, emphasizing the need to strengthen the power sector through privatization, said, “All distribution companies to be privatized need to be given some targets in terms of their actual cost today and the future. They must then perform based on those benchmarks, with accountability, so they continue to do better. Only then the circular debt be reduced.”
Elaborating on the same Ayla, added, “Access, affordability, and sustainable energy sources are three key principles regarding electricity. There is a need to increase the use of local fuels in the electricity sector. The cost of alternative energy resources has decreased. Solar energy is now 80% cheaper, while the cost of wind turbines on land has decreased by 50%. The price of electricity batteries is also decreasing.”
Adding to the conversation, Ruhail said, “For future investments in transmission two things are important, continuity of policies, and rules of the game should be streamlined for transparency. The private sector should also collaborate with the government in this regard.”Exploring ‘The Digital Future’ was the topic for the concluding session of the day, highlighting the role of technology in a digitally enabled future. Mujeeb Zahur, Managing Director, S&P Global Pakistan, moderated the session, which comprised esteemed panelists including, Asif Peer, CEO & Managing Director, Systems Limited; Muhammad Hamayun Sajjad, Chief Executive Officer, Mashreq Pakistan; Abdul Haseeb, Managing Director, TMC Private Limited; Ali Naseer, Chief Data & Strategy Officer, Jazz; and Nadeem A. Malik, Secretary General, Pakistan Software Houses Association. The impact of technology and the changing modalities for global competition were deliberated upon.
Asif stated, “In Pakistan, we need to come up with more business ideas as we have a diverse customer base and there is a strong need to not just optimize but transform holistically and bring forward personalized solutions with a progressive mindset.” Hamayun commenting on the need for financial inclusion through digitization said, “In Pakistan, women’s workforce participation was 13% in 2010, now it is close to 25% and this is mainly because now women can also work from home. Whereas 24% of the world population is still excluded from financial inclusion and there is a massive push from World Bank to include these 1.7 billion people in the fold.”
Ali, emphasizing the need to strengthen the telecommunications sector, said, “Even though we are excited about the digital future, we still really like doing things the old-fashioned way in our everyday lives. We find comfort in sticking to what we know, even if it is not the latest and greatest. “We continue to hope and aspire for a digital future because in our daily life, we are very much content without analog processes and systems.”
Reinforcing the need to be digitally ahead, Abdul Haseeb said, “Rather than a particular type of technology, our focus should be on the ability to learn new skills and to be able to develop new talent around those skills should be our focus as technology will keep on evolving.”
Summing up the discussion, Nadeem outlined the need for the industry to work with technology across the board. He said, “The world is in the midst of a fast-evolving digital economy. In Pakistan, with a strong youth bulge and growing tech space, we have a potential green field where we can truly thrive in the global digital economy.”
The inaugural day of LIIBS 2024 concluded on a motivational note, leaving participants enthusiastic to continue their learning journey the following day. The sessions were marked by the exchange of new ideas, the formation of partnerships, and the exploration of avenues for creativity, and innovation.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Pakistan, Unity Foods Ltd. Executive Director Amir Shehzad sat down for a chat and spoke about the reason of introducing fortified foods in the country and how his company plans to set the standard for high quality food that our population, especially the young generation requires to build themselves to be strong and healthy..
1. Why did you introduce fortified foods in Pakistan?
Amir Shehzad: Regarding malnutrition, the situation in Pakistan is critical. According to various studies conducted, it is estimated that around 45 percent of children in the country under the age of 5 years are malnourished. This situation is even more critical in rural areas. You have to understand that in 15 years from now, these children will become part of the country’s workforce. If they do not develop mentally and physically as per acceptable and established health standards, they will not be able to contribute positively to the country’s workforce. We must understand that these young children are our assets, and we must ensure their adequately nourished upbringing to avoid turning them into the country’s liability.
Insufficient nutrition hampers physical and mental growth, impacting overall development. When a mother lacks proper nourishment and financial resources for food, the child's nutritional needs go unmet. Additionally, a significant consequence of inadequate nutrition is the emergence of major diseases like heart disease, leading to a shortened lifespan and a substantial rise in health-related expenses. Families, caught in the dilemma of choosing between purchasing food and essential medicines, face critical decisions in such circumstances. This underscores the importance of developing fortified foods that encompass all essential nutrients.
Fortifying bread with essential nutrients, including zinc, iron, folic acid, and vitamins B-12, is crucial for its nutritional quality. These fortifications serve as the standard for enriched food, a criterion Unity Foods upholds through its Sunridge brand. The challenge in Pakistan lies in the absence of a national flour brand, except for Sunridge. Since bread is a staple consumed by virtually everyone, fortifying it with vital nutrients can significantly address malnutrition. Enhancing this commodity is more effective, and the unique aspect is that Sunridge is the sole national brand operating throughout Pakistan. While there are a few regional brands, most flour mills lack a national presence. Small mills may be unable to prioritize nutritional additives due to cost constraints.
A dosing system is currently installed at our PESA mill. This system automatically adds fortified nutrients to the flour without human intervention. Our focus is on commodities, aiming to facilitate their easy access for people. The country's food security system holds great importance, and the government must give it due attention. We cannot handle this task alone.
A significant number of countries are currently facing food security problems. In Pakistan, the annual requirement for wheat is 30 million tons, but the production is only 27 million tons. Exporting wheat is not possible until our requirement is met. To resolve this issue, we need to embrace corporate farming, and the government must consider policy changes to support corporate farming initiatives. This includes setting up long-term policies; infrastructure spending focused on enhancing farm production and storage, and policies that support corporate farming by providing accessible and affordable financial solutions.
2. How can Pakistan’s agricultural economy be improved?
Amir Shehzad: Pakistan needs to define itself as an agri economy. This is essential as it will focus on developing policies and infrastructure to support agri based economic activity. It will also encourage the private sector to invest in agriculture, which will eventually not only make Pakistan self-sufficient in their agri needs but also have the potential to have surplus crop produce to export and thus earn precious foreign exchange for the country.
Pakistan lacks long-term strategic economic plans. I remember that in the 1970s and 1980s, Pakistan used to have a 5-year strategic plan, which was famously called the “Paanch Saala Mansuba”, prepared by a think tank run by our very able Dr Mehboob Ul Haq, a great economist of his time. We need to have that practice reintroduced.
For some time, we have become very short-sighted in our policies where we are almost always focused on “fighting economic fire”. This has resulted in us lacking any long-term strategic economic plan. We need to focus on bringing into practice farming-supportive policies. We must focus on developing the required infrastructure to support our agri-production and management capabilities. We must focus on introducing efficient water management practices to conserve the precious. We need investment in R&D to produce high-quality agricultural inputs, including seeds and fertilizer. We need investment in producing the latest machinery to support corporate farming. Any imported machinery should be done on a “transfer of technology” basis. These are some of the starting points that we, as a country, need to implement to make Pakistan a true agriculture powerhouse.
3. What role can the government play in this regard?
Amir Shehzad: The government can facilitate the business sector, but the actual implementation lies within the private sector. The government's role includes supporting research and development (R&D) by establishing R&D centres in Pakistan and providing tax concessions to encourage corporate farming. This requires a dedicated focus on the agricultural economy and providing facilities to agricultural universities. Encouraging R&D investments is essential, ensuring that investors receive incentives to improve seed quality, leading to increased yields per acre through the introduction of efficient corporate farming practices.
Moreover, it is imperative to create a policy framework for corporate farming. The government can also promote technology transfer, encouraging local manufacturing rather than dependence on imports. Additionally, the government should mandate corporate farming operators to maintain a specific quantity of commodities in storage, enabling the establishment of strategic reserves crucial for the country.
4. Is there an expiration date on the packaging of your products, and what is the procedure for their packaging? What technology do you use?
Amir Shehzad: Certainly. Our products come with an expiration date, and our flour, for instance, is marked with a six-month shelf life on its packaging. The packaging process for our products remains void of human intervention at every stage, starting from the wheat's receipt to the silo and then to the mill. Once the flour is processed in the mill, it is automatically packed, again without human involvement.
We have deployed both rollers as well as PESA flour mills. Our PESA set-up was the first in Pakistan to give both the taste and aroma of flour produced by traditional chakkis. We proudly stand as pioneers in Pakistan, the first company to integrate advanced Swiss technology into our plants.
5. What are your plans?
Amir Shehzad: Our plans are derived from our vision statement that defines us as a reliable and sustainable producer and supplier of high-quality fortified staples. We aim to grow our brand into a trustworthy national brand for all basic staples. We have already entered into the value-added confectionery business, which we will continue to build to provide our products to local and international markets. We plan to set the standard for high quality food that our population, especially the young generation requires to build themselves to be strong and healthy.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, there exists a haunting melody of empty stomachs and unfulfilled dreams. A melody that echoes across the land, touching hearts, and fueling the fires of compassion. Can you imagine a world where a basic meal is a luxury, where the growl of hunger drowns out laughter? Pakistan faces this stark reality, with its rank at a distressing 99 out of 121 countries on the 2022 Global Hunger Index. In a country where hunger is a daily reality for millions, Unity Foods Limited (UFL) is fighting back with every tool at its disposal. It has taken up the mantle to grapple with the crisis of food insecurity and malnutrition with an initiative -Sunridge Taqatwar Pakistan. This initiative zeroes in on the most vulnerable segments of our society, recognizing that the battle against hunger is a collective responsibility that cannot be fought in isolation.
Collaboration has become the cornerstone of UFL’s approach. By working hand in hand with governmental bodies, NGOs, orphanages, hospitals, and individual donors, we aim to mount a concerted effort against this catastrophe. The scale of the challenge demands nothing less than Unity in Purpose, an acknowledgment that when it comes to ensuring sustenance for all, every effort counts.
One of the distinguishing features of Taqatwar Pakistan campaign is its dedication to transparency. Recognizing that trust is the bedrock of any successful aid distribution, the organization has harnessed technology to create a state-of-the-art application that tracks the distribution of ration packs. Every data point a note of accountability, every delivery a promise kept.
The contents of these ration packs are far from ordinary. Fortified with essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, folic acid, and vitamin B12, these packs are designed to combat not just hunger but also the insidious effects of malnutrition. Made with the highest quality products from Sunridge Foods, these packs provide the nutrients that people need to thrive. Collaborating with the Government of Sindh, UFL has succeeded in distributing essential ration packs to those who need them the most. Through a strategic integration of the NADRA expertise and data, we ensure that its assistance reaches the hands of the most deserving. We have issued 100,000 registration cards to beneficiaries, confirming their eligibility for assistance. Through partnerships with organizations like JDC Foundation Pakistan, Saylani Welfare Trust, Rizq Foundation, Faizan Global Relief Foundation and Hands Foundation, 150,000 ration packets have already been distributed to underprivileged families.
But our impact is not confined to just the present moment. The ripple effect of our work touches the lives of mothers and children, families grappling with illnesses, and institutions combatting malnutrition. In the medical realm, UFL in collaboration with NICVD & NICH, Jinnah – JPMC, Kutiyana Memon Hospital, MMI Hospital and Civil Hospital has shown a compassionate commitment to the most fragile members of society. From supporting mothers of malnourished children with heart diseases to assisting families of cancer patients, dialysis patients, and disabled patients UFL is bringing hope and sustenance to the doorsteps of those who often feel forgotten.
The road to eradicating food insecurity is not a sprint; it is a marathon. Unity Foods understands this truth and believes in the power of incremental progress. Just as a single drop of water contributes to a mighty river, every ration pack distributed, every partnership forged, and every life touched constitutes a step towards a hunger-free Pakistan. The journey is ongoing, but with each act of unity, we move closer to the destination we envision – a nation where no one goes to bed hungry, where the promise of a meal is a promise fulfilled.

International Youth Day is an annual celebration of the resilience and enthusiasm of the young minds shaping our world’s future. The energy and potential of the younger generation must be harnessed for the greater good. Presently, a staggering 64% of our nation’s population is under the age of 30, with an impressive 29% falling within the dynamic age bracket of 15 to 29 (UN Population Fund Report, 2017). It may have been repeated a number of times but it is a fact that the youth are the future of our world. They are the ones who will shape our societies, solve our problems, and create a better future for all. As a food manufacturing company, we believe that it is our responsibility to provide the youth with the nutritious food they need to reach their full potential. Through a steadfast commitment to quality and nutritional value, each product we offer becomes a weapon in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
In addition to providing nutritious food, we also want to help the youth develop healthy eating habits. We want to help the youth connect with their food. We believe that when people understand where their food comes from and how it is made, they are more likely to make healthy choices. That is why we work with farmers to ensure that our food is produced sustainably and ethically.
UFL is committed to cultivating the next generation of leaders in Pakistan. We have hired over 175 young people to join our workforce, and we are committed to helping them reach their full potential through mentorship, training, and development.
